Hapa Hard Cider: Package Design

Hapa Hard Cider tells the story of the first-generation, mixed-race American. The base of the cider is California apples, then the cider is complemented with Scottish and Filipino ingredients. These bold, one-of-a-kind ciders are a way to experience a mixed cultural background together, rather than separately. The labels celebrate both my story and the ingredients that define my culture.

Using personal experience from my own cultural background I chose to combine imagery that I associate with both my Scottish and Filipino heritage. This imagery includes Scottish Highland Dancing, traditionally done with swords, combined with tinikling, a popular filipino folk dance; a filipino fishing boat with the Loch Ness Monster swimming along the coast, and a woman with both Scottish celtic knot tattoos and indigenous filipino tattoos.

A limited color palette was used to focus the viewer’s attention on the subject matter. The cultural combinations wrap around the cans. A hand-lettered brush font was used to match the casual sketch-style illustrations, and a single pop of color highlights the flavor varieties. The colors chosen come from the flags of both the filipino and scottish flags. The swash of color was made by enlarging glyphs from the brand font, in order to ensure stylistic consistency.
